Donnie Beer, representing the Palmetto Chapter of the American Red Cross, spoke to The Bluffton Rotary club on May 7th, on the importance of the Red Cross in our community and the importance of supporting our local chapter. The Palmetto Chapter of the American Red Cross provides relief to victims of disasters and helps people prevent, prepare for and respond to emergencies.

Serving Beaufort, Hampton and JasperCounties, the Palmetto Chapter provided immediate and direct relief to 65 residential fire victims this past year. The Palmetto Chapter Emergency Services Preparedness and Response teams must be prepared to open and staff over 50 shelters in the event of disaster. The Palmetto Chapter trains staff and volunteers to teach preparedness in our community for storm evacuation, earthquake, pandemic flu and weapons of mass destruction.

Also, the Red Cross is the first point of contact for the military and its families. This past fiscal year, the Palmetto Chapter provided Armed Forces Emergency Service to 4500 military personnel and they provide around-the-clock, around-the-world network that allows members to stay in touch with their families during births, serious illnesses or deaths.

The Red Cross receives no federal funding, but relies on donations of time, money and blood to do its' work.
