Our speaker on December 3 was Lt. Eric Calendine of the Beaufort County Sheriff's Department. Mr. Calendine has given over 70 presentations throughout Beaufort County on fraud and scams and today was his last stop before he moves on to a different venture.
What a valuable presentation! We learned that fraud is a $158.3 Billion dollar business with the average cost to our residents of $4,000 per incident.
Phone call scams pose the greatest risk. 1 in 18 older adults who fall prey to these calls are made to feel pressured and fearful that if they do not comply something bad will happen to either them or their loved ones. Once it is discovered they were duped it has a profound effect and reports show there is a 300% higher risk of death.
Another area of concern is mail fraud and sometimes it's an inside job! Be careful mailing checks because if they are intercepted they can be white washed and changed to different payees and dollar amounts.
Some don'ts are: never allow someone you do not know to remote into your computer, create a family password to verify the authenticity of the request and lock your credit.
With the emergence of AI things may not be what they appear to be. Think before you Trust!

Do you worry about Alzheimer’s? We do not have a cure for Alzheimer’s disease, but we must find one. Finding a cure starts with you. Every year the CART (Coins for Alzheimer’s Research Trust) Fund gives research grants focused on finding a cure for Alzheimer’s disease.
Have you given to the CART Fund this year? The CART Fund is dedicated to raising funds to provide “seed” money for cutting edge, high impact research in hopes of finding a cure/prevention for Alzheimer’s disease. The goal of the CART Fund is to encourage exploratory and developmental Alzheimer’s disease research projects within the United States. This is accomplished by providing financial support for the early and conceptual plans of those projects that may not yet be supported by extensive preliminary data but have the potential to substantially advance biomedical research. These projects should be distinct from those designed to increase knowledge in a well-established area unless they intend to extend previous discoveries toward new directions or applications.
