Meeting Recap: January 15
Wednesday we had the pleasure to hear from one of our very own members, Dr. Rob Darling.  Dr. Darling served for 25 years in the Navy as a flight surgeon and emergency medicine physician retiring at the grade of Captain in 2006.  In 1996 Captain Darling was selected as the first emergency medicine physician to serve the President of the United States at the White House, President Bill Clinton.  He provided medical support services to the President, the Vice President, the Cabinet and their families as they traveled the world aboard Air Force One and Marine One from 1996 to 1999.  Dr. Darling spoke about how Air Force One has private quarters for the medical doctors that is equipped with two beds and is considered their own personal space.  In addition, he recounted a story when John Glenn was in outer space and wanted to send an email to President Clinton.  The message wound up being sent through Dr. Darling's personal AOL email address as President Clinton at the time was unable to facilitate the communication.  Part of Dr. Darlings presentation displayed several photos of his time in the White House and on Air Force one and included the signed email communication that was penned by both President Clinton and John Glenn.  Thank you Dr. Darling for a fascinating presentation!

CART FUND DONATIONS
Do you worry about Alzheimer’s?  We do not have a cure for Alzheimer’s disease, but we must find one.  Finding a cure starts with you.  Every year the CART (Coins for Alzheimer’s Research Trust) Fund gives research grants focused on finding a cure for Alzheimer’s disease.

Have you given to the CART Fund this year?  The CART Fund is dedicated to raising funds to provide “seed” money for cutting edge, high impact research in hopes of finding a cure/prevention for Alzheimer’s disease.  The goal of the CART Fund is to encourage exploratory and developmental Alzheimer’s disease research projects within the United States. This is accomplished by providing financial support for the early and conceptual plans of those projects that may not yet be supported by extensive preliminary data but have the potential to substantially advance biomedical research. These projects should be distinct from those designed to increase knowledge in a well-established area unless they intend to extend previous discoveries toward new directions or applications.
