Our speaker for our October 15 meeting will be Al Stokes.
Al will be speaking on how we were able to get the DNR Heritage Preserve. He will touch on a little history and how it was saved from becoming an Industrial Chemical Plant and the environmental impacts it would have created. Essentially we would not be here.
Al Stokes is the retired manager of the SCDNR’s Waddell Mariculture R&D Center, resident of Victoria Bluff for 45 years, member of the Open Land Trust Board and the Town of Bluffton Stormwater Advisory Committee, and world renown shrimp mariculture consultant.
Bluffton Rotary's own Barry Lefkowitz spoke on October 8 on the growing issues with human trafficking, both internationally and in South Carolina.
It is becoming a huge epidemic in sex trafficking, slave labor and in human organ harvesting that is resulting in a $152 Billion business. There are 50 thousand victims in the United States just from the Philippines and Mexico alone.
The average age of those trafficked is 12 to 14 of which over 70% are female. 60% of victims are now recruited online which has reached down to the high school level in some cases.
The South Carolina legislature has appointed a Human Trafficking Task Force, but funding is insufficient to adequately deal with the problem.
Regardless of issue, please let us know if something is going on to prevent you from attending our meetings. We have many members who can help, pray, or just call to lift your spirits.

Do you worry about Alzheimer’s? We do not have a cure for Alzheimer’s disease, but we must find one. Finding a cure starts with you. Every year the CART (Coins for Alzheimer’s Research Trust) Fund gives research grants focused on finding a cure for Alzheimer’s disease.
Have you given to the CART Fund this year? The CART Fund is dedicated to raising funds to provide “seed” money for cutting edge, high impact research in hopes of finding a cure/prevention for Alzheimer’s disease. The goal of the CART Fund is to encourage exploratory and developmental Alzheimer’s disease research projects within the United States. This is accomplished by providing financial support for the early and conceptual plans of those projects that may not yet be supported by extensive preliminary data but have the potential to substantially advance biomedical research. These projects should be distinct from those designed to increase knowledge in a well-established area unless they intend to extend previous discoveries toward new directions or applications.
