At our August 20 Meeting we welcomed 4 ladies from the United Way of the Lowcountry: Chrystie Turner, Angela Boswell, Elizabeth Palmer and Sherry Halphen. From them we learned the many ways United Way helps our local population. They started off the program by sharing a remarkable statistic - For a family of 3 the Federal poverty guideline is $25, 820 while the actual wage needed to live in Beaufort County is $72, 202! With those stats in mind an acronym shared was ALICE, Asset Limited, Income Constrained, Employed individuals and are among the people the United Way serves. In addition, through their Dignity projects United Way also strives to serve the homeless population. Through Backpacks for the Homeless, the Homeless ID program and Showers of Dignity, United Way is able to assist this segment of the Community. We had the privilege of being able to see the Showers of Dignity mobile unit up front as they brought it along for club members to tour. The Showers of Dignity program, named after dedicated volunteer Becky Francis, is equipped with two showers, porcelain toilet bowls, laundry service and Wifi connections. We all know the power of a hot shower - Truly an unbelievable resource that will make a huge impact on those in need. Thank you United Way! |
