At our August 20 Meeting we welcomed 4 ladies from the United Way of the Lowcountry:  Chrystie Turner, Angela Boswell, Elizabeth Palmer and Sherry Halphen.

 

From them we learned the many ways United Way helps our local population.  They started off the program by sharing  a remarkable statistic - For a family of 3 the Federal poverty guideline is $25, 820 while the actual wage needed to live in Beaufort County is $72, 202!

 

With those stats in mind an acronym shared was ALICE,  Asset Limited, Income Constrained, Employed individuals and are among the people the United Way serves.  In addition, through their Dignity projects United Way also strives to serve the homeless population.  Through Backpacks for the Homeless, the Homeless ID program and Showers of Dignity, United Way is able to assist this segment of the Community.

 

We had the privilege of being able to see the Showers of Dignity mobile unit up front as they brought it along for club members to tour.  The Showers of Dignity program, named after dedicated volunteer Becky Francis, is equipped with two showers, porcelain toilet bowls, laundry service and Wifi connections.  We all know the power of a hot shower - Truly an unbelievable resource that will make a huge impact on those in need.

Do you worry about Alzheimer’s?  We do not have a cure for Alzheimer’s disease, but we must find one.  Finding a cure starts with you.  Every year the CART (Coins for Alzheimer’s Research Trust) Fund gives research grants focused on finding a cure for Alzheimer’s disease. 

 

Have you given to the CART Fund this year?  The CART Fund is dedicated to raising funds to provide “seed” money for cutting edge, high impact research in hopes of finding a cure/prevention for Alzheimer’s disease.  The goal of the CART Fund is to encourage exploratory and developmental Alzheimer’s disease research projects within the United States. This is accomplished by providing financial support for the early and conceptual plans of those projects that may not yet be supported by extensive preliminary data but have the potential to substantially advance biomedical research. These projects should be distinct from those designed to increase knowledge in a well-established area unless they intend to extend previous discoveries toward new directions or applications.
