Our Students of the Month recognized at our May 21 meeting were Garrett DeHann of Red Cedar Elementary and Joey Zoffoli of M.C. Riley.
Our featured speaker for our May 21 meeting was local columnist, author and storyteller Annelore Harrell who recounted with nostalgia and humor what life in Bluffton was like in days gone by, when roads were unpaved, gasoline was scarce, and adventures were plentiful.
Born in 1932 in Savannah, Georgia, Annelore began visiting Myrtle Island in Bluffton with her family in 1942, joining the ranks of the “summer people” who traveled from Savannah. She eventually moved to Myrtle Island as a full-time resident with her husband and children. She founded a real estate company and served for nearly 25 years as a weekly columnist for the Bluffton newspaper, Carolina Morning News, later known as The Bluffton Today.
Annelore’s enduring contributions to Bluffton’s cultural heritage were honored in 2017, when then-Mayor Lisa Sulka proclaimed June 23 as “Lala Day,” celebrating her as the embodiment of the “Bluffton State of Mind” and a model of Southern grace. She was further honored in 2021 when she served as the Grand Marshal of the Bluffton Christmas Parade.
The first 44 of her columns have now been reproduced in her new book, Et Cetera Y’all, which is filled with vintage photos of Annelore’s life in Bluffton. Members of the Bluffton Rotary Club purchased copies of her book, which Annelore then autographed.
Our Satellite Club featured Laura Lee and her husband, Geo Villegas for their May 14 meeting. They have recently partnered to form a 501-c3 in the Lowcountry. Samaritan Warriors is Proud to be a Veteran-owned, Minority-owned, Woman-Owned organization dedicated to serving underserved communities and disadvantaged individuals.

They have formed Samaritan Warriors to respond to individuals in need of immediate assistance, whether food, shelter, transportation or counseling. They can offer both monetary and volunteer assistance.
Lauren and Geo are looking forward to working with many of the local charities in the area, such as Bluffton Self Help, Hopeful Horizons, Deep Well and many others.

Do you worry about Alzheimer’s? We do not have a cure for Alzheimer’s disease, but we must find one. Finding a cure starts with you. Every year the CART (Coins for Alzheimer’s Research Trust) Fund gives research grants focused on finding a cure for Alzheimer’s disease.
Have you given to the CART Fund this year? The CART Fund is dedicated to raising funds to provide “seed” money for cutting edge, high impact research in hopes of finding a cure/prevention for Alzheimer’s disease. The goal of the CART Fund is to encourage exploratory and developmental Alzheimer’s disease research projects within the United States. This is accomplished by providing financial support for the early and conceptual plans of those projects that may not yet be supported by extensive preliminary data but have the potential to substantially advance biomedical research. These projects should be distinct from those designed to increase knowledge in a well-established area unless they intend to extend previous discoveries toward new directions or applications.
