A glorious day for the Arts and Seafood Festival, with sunshine and capacity crowds.
Huge thanks to all who volunteered and did so much in preparation, working during the festival and cleanup afterwards. You are what made this the success that it was.
Our speaker on October 15 was Al Stokes, a very familiar name in the lowcountry. He is the retired manager of the SCDNR’s Waddell Mariculture R&D Center, resident of Victoria Bluff for 45 years, member of the Open Land Trust Board and the Town of Bluffton Stormwater Advisory Committee, and world renowned shrimp mariculture consultant.
Originally called the Devli's Elbow Barony, Victoria's Bluff was renamed in the late 1800's. Originally owned by Richard Thornton Wilson it went through several owners before 1200 acres were transferred to the SC DNR in 1979. It is the home of the Waddell Mariculture Center, which was headed by Al until recently.
Shortly before the property was transferred there were a number of proposals for potential commercial use of the property, including a plastics plant that BASF wanted to build there which was stopped by public outrage.
Regardless of issue, please let us know if something is going on to prevent you from attending our meetings. We have many members who can help, pray, or just call to lift your spirits.

Do you worry about Alzheimer’s? We do not have a cure for Alzheimer’s disease, but we must find one. Finding a cure starts with you. Every year the CART (Coins for Alzheimer’s Research Trust) Fund gives research grants focused on finding a cure for Alzheimer’s disease.
Have you given to the CART Fund this year? The CART Fund is dedicated to raising funds to provide “seed” money for cutting edge, high impact research in hopes of finding a cure/prevention for Alzheimer’s disease. The goal of the CART Fund is to encourage exploratory and developmental Alzheimer’s disease research projects within the United States. This is accomplished by providing financial support for the early and conceptual plans of those projects that may not yet be supported by extensive preliminary data but have the potential to substantially advance biomedical research. These projects should be distinct from those designed to increase knowledge in a well-established area unless they intend to extend previous discoveries toward new directions or applications.
