Our speaker for our September 11 meeting will be Robert Jones, Executive Director of the Historic Bluffton Foundation:
He has lived in Bluffton for over 25 years. He holds a BA in History from the College of Charleston and an MFA in Historic Preservation from Savannah College of Art and Design. Robert previously served as the Director of Preservation for the Historic Beaufort Foundation and was the founding director of the Historic Bluffton Foundation and the Heyward House Museum. In addition to his work in historic preservation, he owns Palmetto Aerial Solutions, providing aerial photography and mapping services. On a historical note, while he isn’t originally from Bluffton, he and his few remaining relatives in the state are direct descendants of one of the seven Lords Proprietors of the State, Lord Anthony Ashley Cooper.
Don Kensey gave us an update on the annual budget before approval by the membership.
Nathan Hawkaluk was our speaker for the September 4 meeting. He is a Project Leader for the National Wildlife Refuge System where he oversees and provides direction and leadership on all refuge management, conservation and operations for the seven refuges of the Savannah Refuges Complex to help fulfill the mission of the National Wildlife Refuge System and the US Fish and Wildlife Service. The refuges are:
Blackbeard Island
Harris Neck
Pinckney Island
Savannah Wildlife Refuge
Tybee Island
Wassaw Island
Wolf Island
There are over 570 National Wildlife Refuges and they are located in every state and territory. They are stipulated to be only used for:
Hunting
Fishing
Wildlife Observation
Photography
Environmental Education
Interpretation
The overarching mission of the National Wildlife Refuge System is to administer a national network of lands and waters for the conservation, management, and where appropriate, restoration of the fish, wildlife, and plant resources and their habitats within the United States for the benefit of present and future generations of Americans.
Over 100 million Americans every year participate in wildlife-related activities.

Do you worry about Alzheimer’s? We do not have a cure for Alzheimer’s disease, but we must find one. Finding a cure starts with you. Every year the CART (Coins for Alzheimer’s Research Trust) Fund gives research grants focused on finding a cure for Alzheimer’s disease.
Have you given to the CART Fund this year? The CART Fund is dedicated to raising funds to provide “seed” money for cutting edge, high impact research in hopes of finding a cure/prevention for Alzheimer’s disease. The goal of the CART Fund is to encourage exploratory and developmental Alzheimer’s disease research projects within the United States. This is accomplished by providing financial support for the early and conceptual plans of those projects that may not yet be supported by extensive preliminary data but have the potential to substantially advance biomedical research. These projects should be distinct from those designed to increase knowledge in a well-established area unless they intend to extend previous discoveries toward new directions or applications.
