We need some additional support for Bluffton Self Help! There will be a "Fill the Van" effort prior to Christmas. On December 11 we will have the SH Van at the Rotary Center for our meeting to collect toy donations for their Christmas store. Please remember to bring toys on the 11!
Mark McCain from Shelter Box and Rotarian liaison Lauren Leonard received a grant from Rotary for the wonderful work Shelter Box is doing to help people recover from the recent hurricanes. The grant will be matched by Shelter Box. Due to the extent of the damage, Shelter Box has expanded its reach to include Florida as well as the Carolinas. Shelter Box will match any donation made to help alleviate the suffering from those hurricanes.
Dean Turner gave an informative talk on the history of Rotary, and on the scope of the Rotary Foundation. From it's founding in 1905 by Paul Harris in Chicago, Rotary has grown to over 46,00 clubs worldwide, with over 1.4 million members.
The very first service project was a comfort station in Chicago in 1907. The Rotary Foundation was organized in 1928, with the first donation - of $26.50 - being made by the Kansas City club.
The Foundation now has over $5.5 billion and 92% is spent on program awards and operations. The grants are used for:
* Promoting Peace
* Fighting Disease
* Saving Mothers and Children
* Supporting Education
* Providing Clean Water, Sanitation and Hygiene
* Growing Local Economies
* Protecting the Environment
From November 15 through the 30 the Rotary Foundation will provide matching points for donor gifts of those aspiring to the next level of the Paul Harris Fellowship.
Our November 20th meeting will feature a teaser from the Musical, Big Fish performed by the students of Hilton Head Christian Academy, directed by Michelle McElroy, Assistant Fine Arts Director

Do you worry about Alzheimer’s? We do not have a cure for Alzheimer’s disease, but we must find one. Finding a cure starts with you. Every year the CART (Coins for Alzheimer’s Research Trust) Fund gives research grants focused on finding a cure for Alzheimer’s disease.
Have you given to the CART Fund this year? The CART Fund is dedicated to raising funds to provide “seed” money for cutting edge, high impact research in hopes of finding a cure/prevention for Alzheimer’s disease. The goal of the CART Fund is to encourage exploratory and developmental Alzheimer’s disease research projects within the United States. This is accomplished by providing financial support for the early and conceptual plans of those projects that may not yet be supported by extensive preliminary data but have the potential to substantially advance biomedical research. These projects should be distinct from those designed to increase knowledge in a well-established area unless they intend to extend previous discoveries toward new directions or applications.
