Rotarians are leaders in their communities, and we'll share Rotary's mission, areas of service, and the benefits of membership, such as networking and fellowship, leadership development, and community service – as well as the global impact this organization has had for more than 100 years.

It's the perfect chance to meet like-minded people, learn about doing community projects with the dozen Rotary club's here in the Hilton Head area, and find out how you can make a difference.

Upcoming Meeting: February 11
Our guest speaker for our February 11 meeting will be Jackie Currie, the Bee Lady, a self-appointed steward of the species.

She drives with bees flying around in her Prius. She climbs trees to capture wild swarms. She tracks the “nectar flow” from the year’s first blooming red maples and dandelions to the last goldenrods and asters of fall.

She will be talking about honeybees and highlights the new threat of the invasive Yellow-Legged Hornet.

Meeting Recap: February 4
Our Speaker at our February 4 meeting was Dr. Debi Lynes.

She spoke about the necessity of good sleep, and its connection to anxiety and why "the colder the room, the deeper the sleep."
She reviewed the four stages of sleep, and why as we age we spend less time in deep sleep.

Some key takeaways:
1. Create a sleep schedule - and stick to it.
2. Aim for 7+ hours per night.
3. Give yourself a buffer before bed.
4. Reserve your bed for sleep.
5. Avoid alcohol or caffeine before bed.
6. Make your bed a sanctuary.
7. Exercise regularly, and outdoors if you can.
8. Don't smoke.

Stress is a normal function of our brain, but it can interrupt our sleep cycle. But, its effects on sleep can be moderated.

CART FUND DONATIONS
Do you worry about Alzheimer’s?  We do not have a cure for Alzheimer’s disease, but we must find one.  Finding a cure starts with you.  Every year the CART (Coins for Alzheimer’s Research Trust) Fund gives research grants focused on finding a cure for Alzheimer’s disease.

Have you given to the CART Fund this year?  The CART Fund is dedicated to raising funds to provide “seed” money for cutting edge, high impact research in hopes of finding a cure/prevention for Alzheimer’s disease.  The goal of the CART Fund is to encourage exploratory and developmental Alzheimer’s disease research projects within the United States. This is accomplished by providing financial support for the early and conceptual plans of those projects that may not yet be supported by extensive preliminary data but have the potential to substantially advance biomedical research. These projects should be distinct from those designed to increase knowledge in a well-established area unless they intend to extend previous discoveries toward new directions or applications.
