ALICE stands for Asset limited, Income Constrained, Employed. They make up the growing number of individuals and families struggling to make ends meet in the Lowcountry. They are your childcare worker, the cashier, your waitress, home health aide or even police officer. Interested in experiencing the challenges our ALICE neighbors face firsthand? You can join one of our free poverty simulations. The simulation is a powerful eye-opening journey that puts you in the shoes of someone struggling to make ends meet. Once you participate in one you can then volunteer to help at another simulation.

The Showers of Dignity is a vital resource that uplifts individuals experiencing homelessness or recovering from a disaster by providing essential hygiene services and connecting them to resources for rebuilding their lives. It’s small act with a big impact. For people experiencing homelessness we also provide seasonal backpacks.

Volunteers make up a huge part of our success. Whether you become a Rotary Reader volunteer, VITA volunteer, Corporate or Community Champion there is always a way to get involved and help empower individuals and families to reach their full potential. Together, we can create a Lowcountry where everyone thrives.

You can help!

2025-10-01 00:00:00Z Sep. 30, 2025 Barbara Catenaci Heritage Library Foundation - History Lessons Oct. 01, 2025

Hilton Head Island and Bluffton history spans thousands of years from Native Americans leaving their footprints in our sand, to European settlers making fortunes in agriculture, weathering the fight for independence and civil war, establishing the first village of freed slaves, the growth of the Gullah Culture, and more that eventually led up to modern development. The Lowcountry has a multitude of stories to tell and it is the mission of The Heritage Library to help preserve much of that history. The Library also works with all those folks who have caught the genealogy bug and want to learn more about the history of their own families. The country is beginning a national celebration of the 250th anniversary of the American Revolution and The Heritage Library will be focused on sharing that part of history as we celebrate this important milestone in South Carolina and the Lowcountry. This morning we take a look at how the Library collects essential bits and pieces of our local history and works to ensure that future generations will be able to learn about our past.
